Woody Allen Settles for $5 Million before going to trial w/ American Apparel
Woody Allen’s battle against a clothing manufacturer who used an image of him from the 1977 movie “Annie Hall” on billboards without permission will not be fought before a jury after all. On Monday morning, as a trial was set to begin in Federal District Court in Lower Manhattan, Mr. Allen announced that he had accepted a $5 million settlement in his lawsuit against the manufacturer, American Apparel, and Dov Charney, its founder and chief executive. The settlement means that Mr. Allen, who had initially sought $10 million, can avoid a trial that could have dredged up potentially salacious details about him and his wife, Soon-Yi Previn. The trial was expected to involve competing claims about intellectual property and free speech.
